New development in the digitisation of proof of age identification for alcohol sales

24 Jan
2024

In the latest development in what has been a long running area for discussion, this being the use of digital technology in proof of age identification for the sale of alcohol, the Minister of State for Alcohol, Policing and Fire Mr. Chris Philp has announced a consultation on whether to allow the use of digital technology in age verification for alcohol sales, and also whether to amend Licensing Act 2003 in order to specify that for sales of alcohol that do not take place face to face, age verification should take place at the point of delivery as well as at the point of sale.

The consultation will run until and including the 30 March 2024, with the Government to publish its response to the consultation, thereafter.
